Myth: Marijuana Makes You Stupid

his is a very, very common statement. If you are old enough, you remember the whole, “This is your brain…this is your brain on drugs” public service announcement they played during after-school specials that used an egg that was dropped into a hot frying pan to demonstrate how drugs were going to destroy your brain. They were right about a lot of substances. Just not marijuana – and that was essentially what they meant by “drugs” throughout the 70s and 80s unfortunately – or, at the very least, put their focus on. We were told that if we smoked pot, we would destroy brain cells forever and wind up a stupid, non-contributing leech on society.

Here is the problem. There is no evidence that this is the case. The reason there is none, is because there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. Not only does it not hurt your brain in the least, it continues to surprise medical researchers with positive results time and time again.

Consider this statement form a medical study of cannabis use:

“In a 2-year administration of high oral doses of THC to rats and mice, no marked histopathological alterations in the brain and other organs were found. Moreover, THC treatment tended to increase survival.” Cannabinoids: Potential Anti Cancer Agents (2003) Manuel Guzman, PhD

Or, how about this one:

“Marijuana produces immediate, temporary changes in thoughts, perceptions, and information processing. The cognitive process most clearly affected by marijuana is short-term memory. In laboratory studies, subjects under the influence of marijuana have no trouble remembering things they learned previously. However, they display diminished capacity to learn and recall new information. This diminishment only lasts for the duration of the intoxication. There is no convincing evidence that heavy long-term marijuana use permanently impairs memory or other cognitive functions.” – Drug Policy Alliance Network, summarizing the results of 4 major studies between 1990 and 2000

Ditto here:

“In those studies, some 700 regular marijuana users were compared with 484 non-users on various aspects of brain function — including reaction time, language and motor skills, reasoning ability, memory, and the ability to learn new information… Long-term and even daily marijuana use doesn’t appear to cause permanent brain damage”- Dr. Igor Grant, professor of psychiatry, University of California. (reflecting on the results of 15 major marijuana studies)

And, as if those weren’t enough:

“When we’re young, we reproduce neurons and our memory works fine. When we age, the process slows down, so we have a decrease in new cell formation in normal aging. You need those cells to come back and help form new memories, and we found that [a] THC-like agent can [assist] creation of those cells,” Dr. Yannick Marchalant, professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

“A synthetic substance similar to ones found in marijuana stimulates cell growth in regions of the brain associated with anxiety, memory and depression”– Dr. Xia Zhang (2005) U of S Neural Systems and Plasticity Research Group
Understand, these are geniuses...not "dumb stoners".

Understand, these are geniuses…not “dumb stoners”.

I really don’t think there is much to say on this. These are but a few quotes out of many that continue to illustrate time and time again that not only does marijuana not do damage to the brain, it actually seems to have a positive impact in cases where brain diminishing and decay are occurring due to natural and other causes.

We have bought into a complete and utter lie if we believe the myth that marijuana makes you stupid. Who are we going to believe – dramatic 1970s TV spots, or prestigious doctors and medical institutes doing actual study and investigation using all the tools available in the 21st century?

Oh, and as an important aside, any movie you see that presents the culture as dumb, stupid and lazy is simply parodying this ridiculous notion and laughing all the way to the bank. Have you actually heard Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong speak or be interviewed? They are brilliant, eloquent and informed. They took a ludicrous stereotype and made a fortune making fun of such ignorance. And we love them for it!
