The Turning Tide

Earlier this year, Pew Research conducted a look into the public’s opinion on marijuana and the issue of legalization. What the data revealed is a drastic turn of events. As the following graph displays, for the first time, a majority of Americans believe that marijuana should be legal (52% versus 45% which still believe it should be illegal).

Even more interesting is an additional data point around the morality of marijuana. When asked if marijuana should be seen as a moral issue in 2006, 50% of those surveyed responded that smoking marijuana was “Morally wrong”. Today, that number has plummeted to 32%, with the opinion that smoking marijuana should not be seen as a moral issue at all rising from 35% in 2006 to 50% today.

What this demonstrates is that the public is beginning to view the issue outside of the propaganda that has plagued it from the start. Propaganda flourishes with an uninformed public. With mountains of data and a plethora of new understanding and medical study material available, propaganda simply isn’t going to work anymore when it comes to the cannabis issue.
